Monday Quotes: The Ordinary Princess

"She raised her twisty coral stick and waved it three times over the cradle of the seventh princess. 'My child,' said the Fairy Crustacea, 'I am going to give you something that will probably bring you more happiness than all these fal-lals and fripperies put together. You shall be Ordinary!'"
~The Ordinary Princess by M.M. Kaye

This story is one of my favorite novellas. After reading all of the books about beautiful princess who are perfect in every way, who are blessed by beautiful fairies at their christenings, comes the story of Princess Amy, who is ordinary. A twist on an overly used cliché.

I love that the fairy is named Crustacea. It's not a name that rolls off the tongue. The drawings in the book show that with the fairy draped in seaweed and having a crooked coral stick. She waves that stick an proclaims: "You shall be Ordinary." (And the fact that she used "fripperies" is just pretty cool.)

Tune in Wednesday for Wednesday Writes.

Cheers!
