“Get on with it, then.” She pun, scorn twisting her features as he stepped close. Dark eyes looked up, their depths filled with mixed emotions—anger and hurt, and deep down a layer of fear.
Holding her gaze, he grasped for words. “Over a month ago, Uncle Henry sent a letter, begging my father to return to the palace. In it he claimed the life of the heir to the throne was in danger.” She froze. “My life?”

Synopsis (from goodreads.com): Princess Aurelia is next in line to rule the kingdom of Tyralt, but she would rather be one of the common folk, free to learn and roam and . . . not marry the next tyrannical prince that comes courting. Naturally, the king wants Aurelia to marry for political power. Aurelia wants to marry for love. And someone in the kingdom wants her . . . dead. Assigned to investigate and protect Aurelia is Robert, the son of the king’s former royal spy and one of Aurelia’s oldest friends. As Aurelia and Robert slowly uncover clues as to who is threatening her, their friendship turns to romance. With everything possible on the line—her life, her kingdom, her heart—Aurelia is forced to take matters into her own hands, no matter the cost.
My thoughts:
I found this book as I was scouring through the books on sale at Barnes and Noble’s After Holiday Sale. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available for purchase, so I went to the local library and checked it out.
The story was intriguing. A plot to kill the crowned princess and her best friend who is trying to solve the case—I love a good mystery. This mystery was definitely surprising. Once we discover who was the person controlling the situation, I certainly had a sharp intake of breath.
Sadly, I felt the romantic connection was lacking. Aurelia and Robert kiss once and even then, I didn’t really feel anything. It felt more like a brother/sister/best friends kind of relationship than any type of real love emotion. I wanted there to be—I was rooting for them to be able to be together.
Also, I found Aurelia’s father to be an annoying character. His reveal of his own affair and the reason for Aurelia’s mother’s abandonment of her family did not give me the emotional impact. In fact, I was mad at him. Maybe that’s what the author wanted. My hope if the author continues with the book, is that when the king dies, there’s a revolt against the royal family, leaving Aurelia as queen.
So, while I did love the mystery and the description was beautiful, I wanted some more character development in this story.
Recommendation: Head to the library
